Asian Appetizers: Savory Dumplings

Dumplings are a very popular appetizer. They are made from ground pieces of meat, vegetables or seafood wrapped in a thin layer of dough or egg. This dish can be fried, steamed or boiled. Dumplings are eaten with a dipping sauce that adds flavor and taste.

Dumplings are very popular in China, Japan, Korea and the Philippines. In China, each region features its own selection of this dish.

You can also make this tasty Asian dish right in your own kitchen. Dumplings are easy to make, and the ingredients are inexpensive and can easily be found in almost all local supermarkets.

One simple dumpling dish is for steamed pork dumplings. To make this recipe you will need cornstarch, dry sherry, freshly ground black pepper, some salt, 30 wanton wrappers, sesame oil, bamboo shoots, egg whites, a small carrot, minced pork, green onions and some fresh coriander leaves.

Get a large mixing bowl. Put the cornstarch in and add dry sherry, egg whites and ground pork. Pour in the bamboo shoots, sesame oil and the onions. Stir all the ingredients together and set aside.

Fill each wonton wrapper with the pork mixture. Be careful to spoon the filling into the middle of the wrapper. Enclose the dumpling by bringing the four sides of the wrapper together. Seal it using a dab of egg white.

Garnish the dumpling by pressing a coriander leaf and carrot shaving on the center of each dumpling.

Arrange the dumplings in the steamer and allow the dumplings to cook for about eight to ten minutes.

Serve with your favorite dipping sauce.
